Today there was another food recall, hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP). A powder distributed by Basic Food Flavors, Inc. There is a concern that it may be contamination with Salmonella.
What is hydrolyzed vegetable protein? They call it a “flavor enhancer.” It is only used to enhance the flavor of foods. When protein breaks down, it breaks down into amino acids. One being glutamic acid. Glutamic acid will bind with sodium (salt) that might occur naturally in the food or also added, and forms monosodium glutamate (MSG). It comes with all the problems that we know MSG to bring. Manufactures do not have to list MSG as an ingredient.
People who are on wheat-free diets also need to be careful, as many HVPs are derived from wheat.
